The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme is the government’s initiative to help decarbonise the UK’s transport systems, achieve zero tailpipe emissions, and reduce air pollution.
The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) helps people who want to charge their electric vehicles at home. There is also a version of the scheme for businesses, which we will cover in our report’s final part.
The grant scheme is run by the Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles (OLEV), formerly the Office for Low Emission Vehicles. The low emission vehicle models that qualify include full battery vehicles and hybrid vehicles where the CO2 emissions are calculated at less than 50g/km.
What is the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme?
The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme is a grant that gives a 75% contribution to the cost of one Chargepoint unit and its installation. However, if a family has two qualifying vehicles, they can claim two grants. The grant has a cap of £350.
To be eligible, you must own, lease, or have placed an order for a qualifying vehicle. You must also have a dedicated off-street parking space at your property.
You do not need to apply for the grant yourself. You simply find an EVHS installer, and they will check your eligibility and apply for the grant on your behalf. You will then be issued with a bill from the installer, with your approved grant knocked off the amount you need to pay.
OLEV runs the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme grant and has committed to approving the grants within 30 working days.
How This Benefits Your Purchase
You can benefit from the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme if you purchase a battery-electric or plug-in hybrid electric car, taxis, van, or motorcycle. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme applies to domestic properties, but there is a Workplace Charging Scheme, also governed by OLEV.
The Workplace Charging Scheme makes the same £350 grant available to businesses, public authorities, and charities. However, these entities can install up to 40 charging sockets and receive a grant for each.
Businesses apply through an online application portal and receive a voucher code to give to their installer. The code is usually issued within five working days and is valid for 180 days.
